Liberal Studies

The Liberal Studies major is an interdisciplinary program designed for students who wish to be introduced to the various disciplines that make up a general liberal arts curriculum. Students complete coursework in each of the major areas of Language, Humanities, Social Science, History, Science and Mathematics, and the Fine Arts.

A Liberal Studies major is an excellent foundation for students wishing to pursue careers or graduate studies in the humanities and is also recommended for student wishing to become elementary school teachers.

COURSES REQUIRED FOR THE MAJOR

1. Language - 23 units

Composition - 6 units – CAA 105, CAA 106
Speech - 3 units – CAA 108
Foreign Language - 8 units – two semesters of any foreign language
Children’s Literature - 3 units
US Literature - 3 units – CAA 235-239, when the courses focus is on American Literature

2. Mathematics and Science - 18 units

Math - 6 units – MAT 101, MAT 102, MAT 103, MAT 104, MAT 107
Computer Literacy - 1 unit – CAA 090 
Biological Science - 4 units - NSC 150, lab A50
Physical Science - 4 units – NSC 160, lab A60 or NSC 170, lab A70, NSC 180, lab A80 
Environmental Science - 3 units – NSC 224/175

3. Social Sciences and History - 24 units

US History & Government - 6 units – POL 101, POL 232, POL 231
Social Science - 6 units - SOC 101, PSY 100, JWC 265, PSY 291
Elective - 12 units – 4 additional courses chosen from the social sciences, history or political science

4. Humanities - 9 units

Humanities - 9 units – courses taken from JWC 200 – 289, PHL 203, PHL 210, PHL 221, PHL 225

5. Fine Arts - 9 units

Art History - 3 units - ART 110
Intro to Music - 3 units - ART 112
Elective - 3 units – ART 113, ART 242, CAA 240-244, CAA 245 - 250

6. Physical Education and Health - 6 units

Movements - 3 units - REC 020, 021, 022, 030, 031, 032 or 040
Health - 3 units - NSC 135

7. Human Development - 6 units

Human Development - 6 units - 2 from PSY 226, 227 or PSY 290 (when the topic is child behavior)

8. Education and Field Experience - 6 units

Education - 3 units – EDU 410 (with permission), EDU 411 (with permission)
Internship - 3 –units – PSY 298 (if internship is focused on children)
